Quaint and charming, Locke is a rural community in Upstate New York’s Cayuga County. Perched on the southern end of Owasco Lake, it’s roughly 45 minutes from Syracuse, Ithaca, and Cortland. The town was named after the well-known English philosopher John Locke and is the birthplace of the 13th President of the United States, Millard Fillmore.

With a total area of 24.4 square miles, the census of Locke in 2000 was roughly 1,900, similar to the town’s population of 1,950 in 2010. Demographically, the racial makeup is predominantly White, with only 2% of residents being African America, Asian, Native American, or Hispanic.

Locke was officially formed in early 1800 from another town named Genoa. It was in the Central New York Military Tract during the American Revolution. Part of Locke was divided and used to make up two separate cities, today known as Groton and Summerhill.

While nature and the great outdoors are the city’s top features, many small, locally-owned businesses have been up and running for decades. Located on the northern town line is the famous Fillmore Glenn State Park, a massive property to enjoy the outdoors. The park is an upstate favorite, with several waterfalls, vast camping sites, unique geological formations, and freshwater swimming pools.

The surrounding towns and major cities are relatively accessible via New York State Route 38, which runs north-south, and New York State Route 90, which runs east-west.
